Set in the prominent location of Abergele on it’s raised hillside, Gwrych Castle has been part of Abergele’s history since it’s construction between 1812 and 1822, It’s a Grade I listed country house in the heart of North Wales and was one of the first attempts at replicating true medieval architecture in Europe. Proudly standing of it’s 250 acres of gardens and grounds, it has extensive views over former parkland including a deer park and the Irish Sea, a keen hot spot for photographers. Bathed in natural beauty and rich in history, the castle was built by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford Hesketh, heir of the Lloyds of Gwrych and was in continuous family ownership until 1946 where it was sold to the Dundonald Family as part of the Operation Kindertransport during World War 2. It’s since change hands a number of times with prospective buyers looking to develop the castle into a hotel but efforts proved difficult during the recession. These days the castle is owned by the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust who are doing a fantastic job of keeping the castle’s spirit and history alive.
